Education & Influences

Education & Influences

Trauma therapy and excellence in supervision have been my passion for 45 years.  It's my mission to give what I have to alleviate suffering in the community, and promote high standards without shaming clinicians or clients.  At this time, I'm solely doing clinical consultation, including individual supervision, case consult groups, and agency team consultation.

I welcome the opportunity to help you grow.

Education & Influences

I'm a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in the State of Washington.

There are many mentors and innovators who have informed my work, including Elaine Loughlin (family therapist), Onno van der Hart (dissociation), and Janina Fisher (traumatic attachment).   Above all, I believe in cultural humility and ALWAYS doing my own work.

I received my MSW @UW in 1986, and was proud to have co-supervised one of the first shelters for unhoused women in Seattle.  I worked with all family members in intrafamilial sex abuse cases in Hawaii, and then from 1990-2003, was a clinical social worker, supervisor and trainer at Harborview Abuse & Trauma Center, before opening my own practice in 2003.

It is incredibly humbling to have been asked to provide consultation for refugee-serving agencies, health clinic IBH teams, Latinx, African-American and Indigenous-focused organizations.

Continuing education is a constant thread that has kept my approach "alive", and recent trainings have included a Master Class in IFS provided by Dick Schwartz and Mastering the Treatment of Trauma by a number of experts including Janina Fisher, Eboni Webb and Pat Ogden.

Finally, I am influenced by seeing the "big picture" of disparities, inequity and the constant need to fight against tyranny of all forms.

Transform Your Practice with South Bay Counseling

Individual Consultation and Supervision

Bring cases, topics and self-of-the-therapist to our supervision.  I'm a seasoned clinician and have supervised since 1995.  Available for in-person and/or virtual appointments.  I am an Approved Clinical Supervisor in the State of Washington.  Preference given to therapists who have a passion for working with highly traumatized clients.

Group Supervision

The Trauma Consult Group

Vibrant in-person monthly Clinical Case Consult Group regarding trauma clients!  This group begins each September with 8 members max, and runs through June.  Meets one Friday each month from 2-4p.  The focus is on sharing cases, topics coming up in the work, and the "self of the therapist", in a context of safety, inclusion and growth for all participants.  This group is for Masters-level therapists.

Virtual Trauma Consult Group

After several requests to start a "virtual" trauma consult group to meet the needs of therapists at a distance, we are just finishing our first cohort!  This group is smaller (5 members max) than the in-person group and meets one Monday each month from 9:30-11a on Zoom.

Let me know if you're interested in our next group(s)!

Agency Supervision

If your agency has a Behavioral Health Team needing monthly group consultation, or particular therapists seeking licensure or ongoing supervision, contact me to discuss how I can be of service.

And one more thing...

Hallmarks of Traumatic Experience

In 2015, I was asked to do some trainings for the State of Washington on Trauma-Informed Care and during the development phase, I wrestled with "What IS Trauma-Informed Care Really?"  I took out my datebook and thought about all of my clients.  What had they been through?  NOT the "what happened" and NOT the "symptoms", but what did they experience coming AT them? And what had they told me got REPLICATED when they went to systems and agencies and individuals for assistance?  And I started making a list:

HALLMARKS OF TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE

   Powerlessness

— Being Forced/Coerced to Do Things

— Things Happen Suddenly w/o Warning

— Violation of Privacy

— Being Humiliated &/or Treated Like You Are Disgusting

— Threat or Harm After Period of Trust-Building

— Injustice

— Abuse of Power

— Voice has no Impact

— Being given "optionless options”

— Signs/Expressions of Pain are Ignored or Used Against You

— Information you Share is Used Against You

— Being Blamed For Causing Your Own Victimization

— Secrecy

— Captivity

— Cruelty

— Rescue or Lack of Rescue

— Abandonment

   Thwarted Attempts at Escape

Trauma-Informed Care...

...means doing the OPPOSITE of that whenever you interact with psychologically injured people.     - Janet Brodsky, LICSW
